Schweitzer may be known for its skiing and biking, but ask any regular and they will tell you the village eats well. From mountaintop lunches to cozy pubs, here is where to point your appetite on the mountain.

For the nicest dinner in the village, head to Crow's Bench inside the Humbird hotel. This alpine-inspired restaurant and bar pairs locally sourced dishes — think elk loin and fondue — with a big fireplace, outdoor seating with gas fire pits, and views that stretch for miles. It is open Sunday through Thursday from noon to 7 p.m., and until 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Up on the hill, the Sky House at the top of the chairlift serves sandwiches and pasta, and its mountaintop perch makes it just as good a stop for a beer or an ice cream sandwich between runs. The Nest Bar & Restaurant near the summit is another can't-miss: ride up, soak in the panoramic views over Lake Pend Oreille, and grab a bite before heading back down.

Morning people should know Gourmandie, the village wine bar and café pouring espresso and serving breakfast sandwiches and small plates. For après-ski, Taps in the day lodge is the classic gathering spot — big, festive, and often with a DJ or a band, though it closes early. Pucci's is the locals' pub: a cozy, kid-friendly bar with a strong lineup of local beers and a menu famous for its pulled pork nachos.

Feeding a crowd back at the condo? Powder Hound Pizza delivers right to your door. Chimney Rock and Mojo Coyote Cafe round out the village options with American fare and casual café bites.

And when you want a night off the mountain, Sandpoint is about half an hour down the road with a whole second dinner scene: MickDuff's Brewpub in a historic federal building, the Fat Pig's exposed-brick dining room, DiLuna's Café for massive and inexpensive breakfasts, and Panhandle Cone & Coffee for small-batch ice cream in flavors like roasted strawberry and wildflower honey.

However you plan your days, plan your dinners, too. On a mountain like Schweitzer, the meal at the end of the day is half the fun.

The Village Overlook is our hilltop condo overlooking the ski village — with Powder Hound Pizza on speed dial and the village restaurants just a stroll below. Come hungry and stay awhile.
