  • Gear Up Now: Tuning, Waxing, and Rental Tips for the 2026-27 Season

With Schweitzer's tentative November 27 opening day on the calendar, now is the time to get your gear mountain-ready. A little preseason attention in October saves you from the all-too-common opening-weekend discovery that your edges are rusty, your boots smell like a swamp, and your wax job is two seasons old.

Start with a tune and wax. Skis and snowboards that sat in the garage all summer need their edges sharpened and their bases cleaned and waxed. Fresh wax is not just about speed; it protects the base and helps your boards glide on the cold, abrasive early-season snow November tends to serve up. If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, a shop tune now beats the preseason rush.

Check the hardware while you are at it. Look over bindings for cracked plastic, worn parts, or sloppy movement, and have a certified technician check your binding release settings if anything has changed: your weight, your boots, or your ability level. Inspect boots for cracked shells, packed-out liners, and buckles that no longer hold. Small problems found in October are cheap; the same problems found at the trailhead are trip-ruiners.

Do a clothing audit too. Try on last year's jacket, pants, gloves, and base layers. Kids outgrow everything, adults discover zippers that no longer zip, and waterproofing treatments fade. Wash and re-treat shells with a DWR product now, and replace what is truly done. Late November in North Idaho demands real layering, so make sure the system works before you need it.

Flying in without gear? The Ski and Ride Center in Schweitzer village handles rentals, from skis and boards to boots, so you can travel light and still be properly equipped. Reserve ahead during busy periods like the Thanksgiving opening week, when rental demand spikes.

Preseason prep is the cheapest performance upgrade in skiing. An hour in the garage now, and you will be ready when the lifts start turning.
