There is a secret the locals keep about Schweitzer Mountain Resort, and it is spelled October. Between the end of summer season and the first real snowstorm, the mountain settles into its quietest, most golden month of the year — and it might just be the best time to visit.
The summer chairlifts have stopped turning, which means the trails are yours on foot. Drive up for free and wander the 2.5-mile Nature Trail near the village, or climb toward the 6,400-foot summit for the kind of views that usually come with a lift ticket: three states, Canada, and Lake Pend Oreille shimmering far below. The village itself is hushed — no lift lines, no crowds, just crisp air and the sound of your boots on the trail.
October is larch season in the Selkirks. While the maples and cottonwoods peak in early October, the western larch hold their golden needles until later in the month, lighting up the ridgelines against the dark green of the firs. It is a short, spectacular show, and Schweitzer's slopes are one of the finest places in the panhandle to catch it.
Pack for shoulder season and you will be happy: layers, a warm fleece, waterproof boots, and bear spray. This is black bear country, and autumn is their busiest season as they fatten up before winter. Make noise on the trail, keep food sealed, and give any bear you spot plenty of room. The ten essentials still apply even on a short walk — mountain weather can turn fast.
Down in Sandpoint, the town exhales too. Shoulder season is when the summer crowds thin and the locals reclaim their favorite tables, a window of calm between Labor Day and Schweitzer's opening day. The tentative date for the 2026-27 ski season is November 27, conditions permitting — close enough that you can feel the anticipation building with every cool night.
Come up in October and you will understand the rhythm of this mountain: summer for wheels, winter for snow, and in between, a few perfect golden weeks that belong to the quiet.
The Village Overlook is our hilltop condo overlooking Schweitzer's ski village — and October might be the loveliest month to sit on the deck and watch the larch turn. Come see for yourself.
