  • Thanksgiving Week in Sandpoint: Fishing Derby Tradition and the Ski Season Kickoff

Thanksgiving week in the Sandpoint area offers a combination you will not find anywhere else: a fall fishing derby with more than four decades of tradition, and the tentative start of Schweitzer's ski season the day after the holiday. It is a week built for people who refuse to choose between a rod and a pair of skis.

The centerpiece is the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club's K&K Fall Thanksgiving Derby, a longstanding late-fall tradition on the big lake. For more than 40 years, the club has run this derby around the holiday, drawing anglers of all ages to chase trophy mackinaw and rainbow trout. Past derbies have offered thousands of dollars in cash and prizes across adult, junior, and youth divisions, with the fall fishery producing some of the biggest catches of the year.

A note on planning: the club announces each year's exact derby dates and rules through its own channels, and I could not verify published 2026 dates as of this writing. Check with the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club before you make firm plans. In past years the derby has run across Thanksgiving week with a pause on the holiday itself, so expect a similar shape this year.

Then comes Friday. Schweitzer is tentatively scheduled to open its 2026-27 season on November 27, the day after Thanksgiving, conditions permitting. That makes Thanksgiving week a genuine two-sport trip: fish the derby days, then trade the boat for the first chair of the season. Early-season terrain will be limited, so think of opening day as a bonus rather than the main event.

Logistics favor the prepared. Thanksgiving week is busy everywhere, and Sandpoint is no exception, so book lodging early and plan for winter driving conditions on the mountain road. Bring both sets of gear, dress for cold mornings on the water and colder ones at 6,400 feet, and build in a rest day. Nobody fishes a derby and skis opening day on the same legs without paying for it.

Gills before gobbles, then first tracks after the leftovers. Thanksgiving week at Lake Pend Oreille and Schweitzer is one of the great transitional weeks in North Idaho. Plan it now and you get the best of both seasons.
