  • Winter Is Coming: Your Guide to Schweitzer's 2026-27 Season

There is a particular feeling in the air around Schweitzer Mountain Resort right now. The summer chairlifts have stopped turning, the village has gone quiet, and somewhere up at 6,400 feet the first flakes are only a matter of time. The 2026-27 winter season is tentatively scheduled to begin on November 27, conditions permitting — and this year, there is a lot to look forward to.

Let us start with the mountain itself. Schweitzer spans 2,900 acres in Idaho's Selkirk Mountains, with 92 named trails plus wide-open bowl skiing. Ten lifts — including Stella, Idaho's only high-speed six-pack — serve a 2,400-foot vertical drop from the 6,400-foot summit. The mountain averages around 300 inches of snow a year, and on a clear day the views stretch across three states, into Canada, and out over Lake Pend Oreille far below. It is the largest ski area in Idaho, and it is still independently owned.

For 2026-27, the resort has announced several new experiences. Private night skiing lets small groups ride after the lifts close to the public — a brand-new way to experience the mountain under the stars. Beginners get a boost from the new Learn to Ski in 3 package: three group lessons with lift access and rental equipment, and anyone who completes all three earns a Grad Pass good for unlimited skiing from March through closing day. There is also a new six-week Women's Wednesdays instructional program for skiers and riders who want to build skills with a welcoming group.

Dining gets a new twist, too. The Crow's Bench Cellar Dinner in the Humbird hotel will pair six courses with wine selections, and the Rowdy Grouse Elopement Package gives couples an on-mountain wedding option for groups of up to ten people.

Beyond the downhill slopes, winter at Schweitzer includes 32 kilometers of groomed Nordic trails, tubing at Hermit's Hollow, and three terrain parks. Twilight skiing on the Basin Express and Musical Chairs runs from 3 to 7 p.m. on select dates — the perfect excuse for one more run before dinner.

If you are planning a trip, the quiet of October is your friend. Lodging, lessons, and rentals all reward early planners, and the village restaurants and shops are resting up for the season. We will be watching the snow reports right along with you. See you on the hill.

The Village Overlook is our hilltop condo overlooking Schweitzer's ski village — a cozy home base for your powder days, with the whole mountain glowing below you at night. We would love to host you this winter.
